We made two examples: a pattern portfolio in ink and indigo, and a Spanish evening-course catalogue in forest green, orange and lemon. The tabs step up the same way and the open section is always tallest; nothing else carries over.
The three tabs rise in steps, with the open section tallest and in a saturated colour, so the cover tells you where you are. The struck-through capsule, the script line, the huge title and the burst sticker come out as you write them, and the title keeps clear of the right edge. The burst's jagged outline changes, and it can hang further past the panel corner than a real sticker would.

Before it runs
- Something this cover is genuinely part of. A lone poster wearing tabs is a filing metaphor with nothing filed.
- Three labels that nest rather than sit side by side. Three equals make the tabs decorative and the tallest one arbitrary.
- One word for the title. The type ladder needs a four-times jump at the bottom, and a phrase cannot make it.
When to reach for it
When a cover has to say where it sits in a bigger collection — a volume of a series, one section of a portfolio, one course among several. The tabs do that job in a glance, which a subtitle never manages.
