We made two examples: a fist holding a lit screen bursting through one sheet, and a brass bell swinging through another, in indigo and oxblood, each with a dry-brush title. In both, the torn paper falls in front of the thing that made the hole.

You get a poster where something bursts through the paper: the hole is cut to the object's shape, black shows in the gap, the fragments fly out from one point, and the torn flaps lie in front of the object rather than behind it. Pick an object that narrows behind its widest point, like a fist with the wrist showing. If the object fills its own hole edge to edge, the paper has nowhere to fall.

Before it runs

  • An object with a near end and a narrower part behind it. The near end supplies the depth; the narrow part is what the torn paper lies across, and without it the law at the centre of this template cannot be satisfied however well the thing is drawn.
  • A short title. Two or three words at brush weight fill the lower block; a sentence set the same way turns into a texture.
  • One deep colour with white type on it. The lower block is doing the contrast work, and a mid-tone leaves the title floating.

When to reach for it

When the news is arrival, launch, opening, a season starting — anything where the point is that something is here now. Templates in this style ask for a 'bursting through the paper' effect and then describe only the debris, which is why the result is usually an object parked in a hole.

What changes

  • One high-contrast poster: a white upper field, a deep saturated lower block, an arrow-shaped seam between them, and a brush title big enough to carry the page.
  • The burst is built by a rule rather than an adjective — torn flaps cross in front of the object, so the paper is a surface it passed through instead of a frame it sits in.
  • The hole is sized to the object, which is what stops the picture reading as a crater with something standing in it.
  • Fragments carry one direction and one origin, largest and simplest nearest the viewer, so the burst has a moment rather than a ring of decoration.
  • Type descends in four clear steps under the title, and the whole thing stays reproducible: change the object, the colour and the words, keep the layout.
