We made two examples: a quartered cover for Vibary and a yearbook for urban beekeepers in wax cream and honey amber. The cross holds; the four quarters tell someone else's year.

Two hairlines cross off centre, a bright square sits exactly on the intersection, and each quarter does one job. The flat ground, the four-colour limit and the steep scale of sizes hold every time. The crossing tends to drift closer to the centre than asked, and the corner mark can come out as a bracket. Double-check what you type in the title, especially if you split it over two lines: the picture prints it exactly as written.

Before it runs

  • A title that splits into two lines. It gets set enormous, and a single long line will not fit the lower-left quarter.
  • Something for all four corners. An empty quarter collapses the structure the whole design rests on.
  • One ground, two supports, one accent. Adding a fifth colour is the only way to make this layout look cheap.

When to reach for it

For a brochure front, a portfolio cover, a series that has to stay recognisable across a dozen issues. The cross does the work, so the only decisions left are the colour and the words.

What changes

  • A finished cover on one saturated flat colour, with no texture, gradient or ornament anywhere.
