We made two examples: a fawn asleep in a crescent moon, and an underwater scene with a single scallop shell, the one the otter is curled in. Fish and bubbles sit above, pebbles below, seaweed through the middle. The density differs a lot between the two: the first fills its middle band edge to edge, the second leaves open teal between the seaweed stems. The skill sets which motif does which job and where the quiet area goes, not how many elements to draw, so both are right.
You get a dense children's illustration with flat colour and heavy grain that still feels composed. The main motif appears only once, right where the animal is, and each kind of element stays in its zone: sky above, flowers in the middle, mushrooms and stones on the ground. One corner is left nearly empty, and that gap is what makes the rest readable. The number of elements can vary a lot between images.

Before it runs
- A subject that can hold the centre. Everything else in this style is decoration, and decoration cannot carry a picture on its own.
- Motifs you can assign to zones. Sky things in the sky, ground things on the ground — without that, density has no structure to be dense within.
- The nerve to leave one area nearly empty. It will feel like an unfinished patch and it is the thing that makes the rest readable.
When to reach for it
