New to AI: get a result first, understand it second
Most people are disappointed the first time they use an AI, and it is usually not the model. It is not knowing what to say. This page has no theory in it. It is about getting something decent back on the first try.
Run one: copy it exactly, change nothing
Pick whichever entry is closest to what you are making, copy it as it is, paste it into the chat and send. Resist editing.
The point is not a finished piece. It is seeing what specific looks like: a prompt that works names the style, the composition, the purpose and what to avoid, rather than asking for "a poster".
Run two: change one word and watch
Second time out, change exactly one thing: a colour, a style word, the setting. Send it, and compare the two.
One change at a time is how you learn which word did the work. Change five and all you get is a different random result. This is the fastest way to learn it, and it is the part a tutorial cannot give you.
Run three: point it at your own work
By now you can see the shape of the thing. Swap the subject for your product, your name, your situation, and leave the rest standing.
If the result falls apart, look at what you replaced. The load-bearing words are usually the ones describing style and constraints, not the nouns.
Where not to spend your time
You do not need the theory of how a model works, and you do not need to memorise settings. What you are judging is the result, not the arithmetic behind it.
You also do not need to shop for tools. Use the one you already have and do the three runs above. The gap between tools is far smaller than the gap between asking well and asking badly.
Questions
- I do not even know what a prompt is. Will this make sense?
- Yes. A prompt is simply what you say to the AI. Every one here has already been tuned by someone: copy it, look at the result, then change the words in it. No terminology to learn first.
- Why are the prompts I write myself so weak?
- Usually they are too general. The model will not guess your style, composition or purpose, and left to itself it takes the average, which is what "obviously AI" looks like. Every prompt here pins those down, and editing one is faster than starting cold.
- What does it cost?
- Browsing, previews and the opening of every entry are free and need no account. The full content and one-click copy are paid. Beyond that you need nothing: the AI you already have is enough.
- How long before it makes a difference?
- The first copy and paste should already produce something; that is the design goal. The real change comes about a week in, when you start knowing what to say and which word to change. That is when you can actually use it.
